How Do I Register A Moped If I Dont Have The Registration In Michigan

Help Registering Moped In Michigan, Delight Help, I'k Drastic!

Hullo all, I'm new to the forums.

The reason I've come up hither is because I am in desperate need of assistance trying to get my girlfriend's moped up on the route. Here's how the story goes:

My girlfriend bought a 2006 49cc Super Motor B-08 moped off of her uncle a few days ago, to get to and from work. She spent $300 on this thing, and information technology runs great - the but problems it has are cosmetic. Anyways, so we looked up all of the laws and whatnot of owning and operating a moped here in Michigan, scraped the money together to get it registered and whatnot, and she takes it downwardly to the Secretary of State today, only to find out that her nib of sale and multiple forms of ID aren't enough to get this thing registered and good to get.

Instead, she comes back dwelling with paperwork that she has to make full out, just to get this matter legal. The forms include a Ownership Certification form (the moped never came with a championship, and was never registered, which is weird, considering her uncle had this thing for ix freakin years), a Vehicle Number And On-Route Equipment Inspection form, and a Michigan Department of Country Vehicle Uniform Surety Bond form.

She was told that nosotros could get online to observe the off-white market value of the moped (as they want to accuse her 6% sales tax on it), that we need to take a surety bond on information technology, and accept a police officeholder come to our house to audit it and make full out the Equipment Inspection grade. Seems like a lot of hoops to jump through merely to get a moped legally on the road, merely paperwork is piece of cake enough, correct?

Hither'southward the issues - first off, I've tried searching ALL OVER the place trying to notice the "fair market place value" of this thing, and can't find anything at all. I take the VIN, and a quick check of the VIN at the Cyclepedia Motorcycle VIN Decoder website gives me this:

The following manufacturers lucifer the World Manufacturer Identifier associated with your VIN, still we do not list whatever model specific data at this time.

Manufacturer Name: Zhejiang Huangyan Sanye Group Visitor Lt

Address: No 2 Xintang Route West

Naught / Country / Phone: 318020 Red china

Production Blazon: Motorcycle, Moped

Searching the manufacturer name, forth with the brand and model of the moped, I couldn't find anything at all. Then, at this point, I'grand clueless every bit to what to do to find the "off-white market value".

Adjacent event is, how practise I go virtually getting a Surety bond? I've looked up how to become one, and every time, it seems that I can just detect companies that deal with Surety bonds for businesses or dealers. I don't take hundreds of dollars to spend on a Surety bond, just it seems that the lowest cost I've found thus far has been 1-3% of the lowest Surety bond coverage cost (which is $2500), significant I could be spending anywhere betwixt $200-$600 just for the bail itself.

I honestly thought buying a moped would make things easier. Pay the $15 to get it registered, the 6% sales tax on it, and y'all're good to go. Instead, we get this run-around, and I'k absolutely lost on what nosotros should practise.

Please, anyone out there that can offer any kind of advice, delight do! I would greatly appreciate, as the people down at Secretarial assistant of State are unable to offer any kind of help, and I have never had to deal with anything like this.

Thanks :)

Oh. Well, if it'southward a scooter, does that mean that it would fall under different laws than a moped? When I checked the Secretarial assistant of State website, it basically stated anything over 50cc is considered a motorcycle, and otherwise, is a considered a moped.

Heh, at first, yous had me actually confused. Anyways, I searched this site for what you said, and came across this:

http://world wide web.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Mail_in_Registration

This is what you're talking near, correct?

If and then, I noticed it said at the terminate of information technology that you volition receive a plate in about a week, and the registration in iv weeks. I thought you demand a registration sticker, not a plate? Or is the plate just to put the registration sticker on it? Also, I take it that the moped would be registered in Vermont, but legally driveable in Michigan? If so, when information technology comes fourth dimension to re-register it (I believe it's stated it must be registered once every iii years), would I have to go through the motions to re-register it in Vermont, or could I register it here in Michigan?

Thanks a ton for your reply, very helpful. :)

Re: Help Registering Moped In Michigan, Please Help, I'm Drastic!

You lot should be able to transfer the championship from Vermont to MI since it has a title now.

Re: Help Registering Moped In Michigan, Please Help, I'm Desperate!

Since it'south a scooter and probably goes faster then a true moped get a plate from Vermont is your best bet. Maybe this flows chart may help tell you tell the difference

Re: Assist Registering Moped In Michigan, Please Assist, I'one thousand Desperate!

Well, cheers for the replies anybody. Hopefully the VT method will get things all squared away, guess I'll find out within the next few weeks. Y'all guys are great though; I spent hours concluding night scouring the Internet for answers to this big ol' mess (and that says a lot, considering I substantially search Google for a living).

If I have anymore questions, I'll be sure to come dorsum and enquire away. Ya'll are definitely a lot more knowledgeable than myself in the ways of the moped (I honestly didn't even know the departure between a moped and a scooter, so thank you for that too lol).

Re: Help Registering Moped In Michigan, Delight Assist, I'm Desperate!

I know this is an quondam thread just I figured I'd toss this out hither in case someone else in Michigan is "gifted" a moped past a relative. http://www.michigan.gov/documents/sos/SOS_Moped_App_R-2L_220299_7.pdf

Re: Aid Registering Moped In Michigan, Delight Help, I'm Desperate!

....as if any mich secretarial assistant of state employee gives a crap about verifying anything to practice with moped registration. Who has ever actually had a cop inspect/verify their vin/model/beak of auction, etc? Who has e'er actually had a sec of land employee trot out to the parking lot to verify any of that? Who'southward agape of going to jail if it's e'er discovered that you lot actually made any of this info up out of thin air on a 49cc glorified bicycle? (as long equally y'all're confident that you are Non in fact riding a stolen ped that is). I know the ownership of both my bikes all the manner dorsum to the original auction. If I'm missing some essential slice of info for the sec of land I'll just "exist back in a sec" and return with whatever numbers or "freshly" handwritten bills of sale that satisfy them. (edited)

Re: Help Registering Moped In Michigan, Delight Help, I'k Desperate!

I accept an MB5 in MI w/ a moped sticker on it.

DMV didn't give a crap, just put HONDA MOPED on it and luckily the VIN wasn't registered as a motorcycle.

Pulled over on it almost a year later. Cops gave me some shit for the sticker beingness sideways and not vertical, then told me the speedometer could not read higher than the acme speed of the vehicle. Didn't say anything almost it, ya know, being a motorcycle.

I lived in Westward Michigan for 59 years . I accept had a Michigan Country Trooper totally inspect , including the VIN , a cycle I built on a frame that had never been registered , anywhere .

I have had SOS employees walk out to the vehicle in question to verify a VIN .

And , I don't intend on e'er going to jail .

Just practise it right and never have a worry .

Re: Aid Registering Moped In Michigan, Please Help, I'chiliad Desperate!

Yep, in Michigan anything that is under 100cc, but DOES NOT Go ABOVE xxx mph Top SPEED can exist registered as a moped, $15 for a 3-yr sticker. Guy friend took in paperwork for a 49cc scooter, they said no that's a motorcycle. Woman took in same paperwork for same scooter, they accepted it. HA! (and top speed is more like 45 mph, so in that location). No ane checked a daaaam thing.

Problem? Try a different office on a different twenty-four hours, ship someone of a different gender, get a different clerk...
